I think the political “normal” in Wisconsin -and I hope in the United States as a whole – has been changed. Permanently. The forces against Koch-funded corporatism are rallying fast, they are vast and diverse, and they are going to have a ground war that you have never seen before. This is the revolutionary war of 2011 and the Koch Brothers are The Red Coats. You know how that worked out.
Before you jump to conclusions, there are no guns involved in this revolution. Think networks, tweets, comments, hacks, picketers, and pocket books.
I could never imagine that the hacker activist group called Anonymous would be involved in my state’s politics. And as far as I can tell, they have never called on a boycott of products on the scale of what they’re now calling for to combat Koch Industries.
I’ve come to know them for persistently fighting the Church of Scientology. They’ve caused the white supremacist Hal Turner’s site to rack up thousands in bills, they’ve led police to an internet sexual predator named Chris Forcand. They launched DDoS (denial of service) attacks on Amazon, Paypal, and other financial sites that refused to accept donations for Julian Assange of Wikileaks. They brought down Egyptian sites unfriendly to protesters. (more at Wikipedia)
They’re vigilantes capable of calling out evil, finding the chinks in its armor, pooling the efforts of legions, and defying the law. These vigilantes may or may not have done things you approved of in the past. I am not sure it matters, because they’re now your allies whether you like it or not. Anonymous has now focused its forces on fighting Americans for Prosperity and Koch Industries.
Their Wisconsin-focused efforts are called “OpWisconsin”. From their OpWisconsin press release:
The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating ‘grassroots’ organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are just a few of these organizations. In a world where corporate money has become the lifeblood of political influence, the labor unions are one of the few ways citizens have to fight against corporate greed. Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.
Anonymous states they are “actively seeking vulnerabilities” (I assume vulnerabilities refers to computer security vulnerabilities). They ask everyone across the globe to boycott the following products, which typically carry the Georgia Pacific logo.
I don’t want to nitpick with Anonymous, but I will add two other suggested “products” to boycott: The Wisconsin State Journal and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Both newspapers have widespread distribution in Wisconsin and both endorsed Scott Walker for Governor. In their endorsement of Scott Walker, they ignored his blatant union fighting in Milwaukee County, his derelict supervision of the public assistance programs of Milwaukee County which had to be taken over by the State, and they ignored his campaign funding by extreme Right Wing Christians. Wisconsin can and must do better. We need working, professional delivery of non-corporate newspapers, web sites, and video channels to Wisconsin citizens so we will get out AND STAY OUT of the hole those newspapers helped put us in.
