The WCTU is based in Evanston,Illinois, home of Northwestern University, just as it has been for over 100 years. They were among the first groups to speak to speak out against alcohol as a factor in spousal abuse and the carnage on the highways. Today they are seen as a quaint anachronism fighting a rearguard action against alcohol in the age of designer drugs, but if they see Wisconsinites as a bunch of alcoholics who would rather beat up nurses and teachers as "union thugs"than pass effective drunk-driving laws, then they may not be so far off the mark as some think. Go MADD!

Nomi - Even though I love beer, I can totally understand the interest in an alcohol-free event. Plenty of people are out there trying to combat their own alcoholism or they are sick of the alcoholics around them. Statistics say WI is a top drunk-driving state and binge drinking state. Best we can hope for in this part of the country is more moderation. People start drinking so young here.

Thanks Blue, I suddenly feel better.
The "slip and slide" graphics are great.
Were there any protestors on the waterfront?
I had to work today, but I have a canoe.

First, thanks for the recap! I was wondering how it went and, quite frankly, am sick of any and all mainstream media right now. (Yes, you detect a hint of attitude. :)

Next, this Woman’s Christian Temperance Union was a huge surprise to read about! While I'd never join such a group, I was also very displeased to hear it was a Brat and Beer party. Being the only non-alcoholic in my family, and having survived the alcohol-related (early) deaths of 4 very close loved-ones, I prefer that the use of alcohol be downplayed, not advertised. All I can think when I hear there is beer at a party is "someone's going to be driving drunk." So, yeah...I gotta give the ladies a cheer for making an appearance and taking a stance against alcohol!

Sorry...just had to get that out. Thank you!
